India: Update on Jitendra and his family

10 August 2017

Update on Jitendra and his family

Last year we shared the story of Jitendra* (pictured left) and his family. They became Christians after God healed Jitendra of an illness, but their Hindu neighbours were angry about their decision to follow Jesus. The family were beaten so severely that Jitendra was hospitalised, and they were forced to leave their village. Open Doors partners were able to pay for their medical bills and provide food aid, thanks to your prayers and support.

Our local partners recently sent us an update on the family. Understandably, the family felt that they couldn't return to their village where their attackers live. "They have built a small hut about 10-15 km away," our local partner says. Jitendra and his family do not interact with the people who attacked them, and try to stay away from them as much as possible.

Open Doors partners have continued to visit the family to encourage them, and recently provided them with a cart and some raw materials to help them start a small food business. They are now able to support themselves well. They also continue to attend church regularly, and despite everything they have been through, their faith is strong.

Stand with your church family in India

Thank you for your prayers and gifts, which enable Open Doors local partners to support persecuted believers like Jitendra and his family.

India is number 15 on the 2017 Open Doors World Watch List. Through local partners, Open Doors is supporting the church in India with emergency aid, advocacy support, holistic training, livelihood and community development, adult literacy programmes, and Bible distribution.

There are three things you can do to support your church family in India:

  • Pray. Please pray for believers like Jitendtra and his family, for protection, provision, and strength. Pray for the persecutors, that God would change their hearts and turn them to himself. And pray for Open Doors local partners, for wisdom and energy.
  • Give. Every £21 could resource a Rapid Response team of volunteers for a month as they give food, medical care and legal assistance, as well as comfort and support, to persecuted believers.
  • Bring a group to Standing Strong. Pastor Sandeep Kumar* from India will be speaking at our Standing Strong celebrations in Birmingham and Belfast in October, alongside others. Book your tickets, bring a group, hear directly from our persecuted brothers and sisters, and stand with them in prayer and worship.
