Part of the Russian Federation, but in practice with considerable independence, the level of persecution is so great that it is considered a separate region in the World Watch List. Years of war saw most people of Russian origin-and therefore most of the Christians-leave the country. To become a Christian is to betray Chechnya, thus Chechen believers are under enormous pressure. Despite this, some small groups of secret believers meet together at great risk.
