Citizens are Muslims by default. Distributing non-Islamic religious literature is forbidden, though private ownership is not prohibited. The sentence for converting to another religion is death, although this has not formally been carried out in recent years. There are probably no more than 700 believers; some were arrested and put in prison in 2007. As more information becomes available, it is becoming clear that the situation for Christians is deteriorating.
