Christian persecution in Morocco

Key Facts:
Leader: King Mohammed VI
Population: 33 million (0.1% Christian)
Majority Religion: Islam
Type of Government: Constitutional monarchy

The year 2006 saw an improvement in the situation in Morocco: there were fewer interrogations of Christians and the government's attitude now seems more open towards believers than in the past.

But it remains illegal to attempt to encourage a Muslim to become a Christian.

There are churches recognised by the government, but only foreigners can worship in them. Missionaries have been deported for distributing Christian literature, and Arabic Bibles have been confiscated.

Prayer

  • Praise God for the signs of change in the past year
  • It is estimated that only five per cent of the population have had any contact with the Gospel. Pray that God would reveal Himself in power
  • The Moroccan Church is tiny and converts from Islam face a potential ordeal. Pray for strength, wisdom and courage in the face of intimidation.
