Under the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islamic law, "apostasy" (leaving Islam) is punishable by death.
Public non-Muslim worship is prohibited.
Nearly all the Christians who live in Saudi Arabia are expatriate workers.
In 2006 four East African Christians were arrested when meeting for worship. Accused of "preaching to Muslims, planting churches and gathering ladies and gentlemen together for prayer", they were held for over a month in poor conditions, then deported.
