Christian persecution in Tunisia

Key Facts:
Leader: President Ben Ali
Population: 10 million (0.2% Christian)
Majority Religion: Islam
Type of Government: Republic

A relatively prosperous and secularised country, long-term President Ben Ali has been criticised for not tolerating dissent – but he has also taken a strong line against Islamic supremacists.

Most Christians are foreign residents; there are very few Tunisians who have become Christians.

Missionaries are allowed in Tunisia, but have to be very careful how they share the Gospel – 'proselytising' is not allowed, nor is the distribution of Christian literature in Arabic.

Prayer

  • Pray that there might be a move of God's Spirit that would encourage Tunisian people to turn to Jesus
  • Ask that Christian literature and radio programmes in French might be positively received
  • Pray for the nurture of new believers, that they might grow in understanding and wisdom.
