The Handmade Petition was created in 2019 as part of Open Doors' ongoing See. Change. campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the millions of Christian women around the world who are doubly vulnerable to persecution, targeted both because of their gender and because of their faith.

More than 16,000 Open Doors supporters took part by writing, painting, drawing or embroidering their names in this unique petition, along with over 250 Christian women from across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America who have been persecuted for both their faith and gender. Open Doors’ vision is that every woman who is persecuted for her faith and gender is seen, valued and empowered to reach her God-given potential.

The petition continues to push for policy which recognises that, in order to address the problem of sexual violence in conflict, the persecution of faith needs to be recognised too. In many countries the two are inextricably linked.

In November 2019, thousands of the petition squares were exhibited in the Chapter House, Westminster Abbey. We're really pleased that more people across the UK will now have a chance to see hundreds of the petitions in this new exhibition. If you're able to visit in Birmingham, please use this as a tapestry of prayer for our persecuted sisters around the world. If you're not able to go, please pray that the petition will move the hearts of many visitors.

PLEASE PRAY

Lord, we lift up the UK Government and all decision makers in the UK and Ireland as they tackle the issue of freedom of religion or belief around the world. We ask that You would give them great wisdom and compassion, and that the advocacy from Open Doors supporters would land on listening ears and help our persecuted family.
