HOW MANY CHRISTIANS LIVE IN Mali?

425,000 Christians live in Mali, making up just over two per cent of the total population of 19.1 million. The majority of the population are Muslims.

WHY ARE CHRISTIANS PERSECUTED IN MALI?

Muslims in Mali are generally moderate and tolerant of other faiths. However, since the civil war in 2012, militant Islamic groups from the Arab and Tuareg tribes have been active, especially in the north of the country.

WHAT IS LIFE LIKE FOR CHRISTIANS IN Mali?

Christians are experiencing an increase in violence and hostility, especially those who openly share their faith. Believers from a Muslim-background particularly suffer the trauma of rejection and intimidation from their families. Traditional and cultural norms mean that many Christian women and girls are subjected to sexual abuse, forced marriage, under-age marriage, and are denied access to modern education. Kidnapped missionaries are still being held hostage.

Your support and prayers are providing vital aid for persecuted believers in Mali like Natasha. She is a believer from a Muslim background, and her husband was killed for his faith. When she fled her home with her two children to escape the violence of the civil war, she was left with nothing. “I had nowhere to stay and no money… I felt like I was chaff in the wind.”  Open Doors heard about her through her local church, and provided her with support so she could rent a simple apartment.

"This help came just at the right time. It brought a huge sigh of relief."

She still faces pressure from her Muslim neighbours. "They laugh at me when I sing and pray.” But the love of Jesus is evident in her attitude towards her persecutors. “I am a Christian, I have to show love even to the worst of my enemies. Who knows, I may draw them to Christ despite their attitude towards me."

HOW CAN I HELP CHRISTIANS IN mali?

Persecuted church talks

You can give to provide vital support

Open Doors partners with the local church to serve Christians in Mali by providing Bibles, training for pastors, economic empowerment projects, and care for new believers.

£51 could provide training to three persecuted Christians in Africa to help them generate their own income and restore their dignity.

You can pray

Brother Andrew, the founder of Open Doors, says, “Our prayers can go where we cannot... There are no borders, no prison walls, no doors that are closed to us when we pray.”

A PRAYER FOR MALI

Lord Jesus, please protect our brothers and sisters in Mali and give them the courage to witness to their friends and family about Your love. May Your church be a positive influence in the country, ready to share the blessings of forgiveness and peace. Protect those who are helping to build Your kingdom and transform the hearts of those who would do them harm.
