Christian persecution in Brunei

Key Facts:
Leader: Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah
Population: 379,000 (11% Christian)
Majority Religion: Islam
Type of Government: Constitutional sultanate

The Bruneian government requires that when a citizen applies for certain jobs, they must first become a Muslim.

Decrees in the 1990s banned the public celebration of Christmas, import of Christian literature and contact with Christians in other countries.

One Christian said: "We are allowed to be Christians as long as we stay within the limits."

Outreach to Malays is not allowed, but the government offers incentives for people to convert to Islam.

Prayer

  • Pray that the Bruneian people become aware of their spiritual emptiness
  • Pray that expatriate believers will find opportunities to share their faith
  • Pray that the Bruneian government will soften its attitude towards evangelism and worship.
