In many ways, Daniela (12) and Sebastián (5) from Colombia are like many children. They both have their favourite hobbies – Daniela loves drawing, whilst Sebastián enjoys playing football – and they have fond memories of spending Christmas with family and friends.
But in other ways, their story is tragically different. In August 2019, Daniela and Sebastián’s father was shot dead in his own home. He was a pastor in a dangerous part of the country, and he paid the ultimate price for speaking out against organised crime and helping prevent young people from being recruited.
Last Christmas, Daniela, Sebastián and their mother, Alba, spent four weeks at the Colombia Children’s Centre, which is run with support from Open Doors. The centre is a safe place for Christian children affected by the action of illegal armed groups, or from traditional leaders who do not accept Christians in indigenous communities, either as permanent residents or a short stay.
“I felt good for the first time in a long time,” says Daniela. “I met many children and learned that, although there are difficult times in life, there are also times when Jesus helps us to overcome through people and prayer.”
There are currently over 70 children at the Colombia Children’s Centre. You can now write to them, along with Daniela and Sebastián!
Could you send a picture, postcard or short message to encourage these children in their faith and let them know they’re not alone?
