Christian persecution review: Foreign Office implements one of our recommendations

Lord Ahmad has been reappointed as the Prime Minister's Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief - one of Open Doors' three recommendations for the Foreign Office after their review of Christian persecution.

We're very pleased to say that one of Open Doors' three recommendations for the government, following the Foreign Office review of Christian persecution, has been adopted. We welcome the news that Lord Ahmad had been reappointed as the Prime Minister's Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

This is an encouraging sign that the new leadership is beginning to take the issue seriously. Many thanks to those who have contacted their MP, asking them to highlight Open Doors' recommendations. One down; two to go. If you haven't already done so, please speak to your MP about the remaining asks. If we don't make sure that persecution stays on the agenda, it may be neglected in a time of political change. Let's keep the momentum going!

Our previous post details the report, Open Doors' recommendations, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson's commitment to support persecuted Christians. He has reiterated this support in the chamber in reference to Asia Bibi: “it is very important that our country sends a clear signal that we will provide a beacon for people facing such distress and persecution”. Please join us in holding him to account, and ensuring that Johnson puts his words into action.

Please pray

  • Thank God that Lord Ahmad has been reappointed, and that the government is taking persecution seriously
  • That the Foreign Office will adopt Open Doors' other recommendations
  • That the actions of the UK Government will help our persecuted brothers and sisters.
